FIVE RINGS ONLINE ASSESSMENT GUIDE
Five Rings does not publish a universal assessment format. Candidate accounts often mention estimation, probability, and mental math, so this guide trains those skills without pretending the details are settled.

Checked against the Five Rings careers site in August 2026. Quantitative trader roles are open, but the firm does not publish one assessment structure. Most details online, including the timer, question count, platform, and calculator rules, come from candidates. They can go stale quickly.
What is the Five Rings online assessment?
Candidate accounts describe an early quantitative screen where the obvious brute-force calculation is often too slow. You may need a rough order of magnitude, a probability shortcut, or a clean approximation instead.
What should you study?
| Area | What strong performance looks like |
|---|---|
| Estimation | Building a compact model, choosing round assumptions, and checking scale |
| Probability | Finding complements, conditional probabilities, and efficient counts |
| Expected value | Pricing simple bets and comparing uncertain payoffs |
| Mental math | Fast percentages, ratios, multiplication, and approximation |
How should you solve fast estimation questions?
First pin down the unit. Write a small equation and choose round assumptions you can defend. Calculate, then check whether the answer makes sense. To estimate daily takeaway coffees in a city, use population × adult share × coffee-drinker share × purchase rate. The structure matters more than false precision.

Representative practice questions
- Estimate the number of piano tunings in a city of 2 million people per year. Build a household-based model and give a defensible range.
- Approximate 49 × 203. Answer: 9,947; use 50 × 203 − 203.
- Chance of at least one six in two fair rolls? Answer: 11/36.
- A game pays $20 with probability 0.2 and costs $3. EV? Answer: $1.
- Which is closer to 1: 31/32 or 49/51? Answer: 31/32.
These are original representative questions, not Five Rings questions.
One week of focused prep
- Day 1: diagnose mental math, probability, EV, and estimation.
- Days 2–3: solve Fermi questions, first carefully and then under short timers.
- Day 4: drill probability and expected-value shortcuts.
- Day 5: train approximation, ratios, and order-of-magnitude comparisons.
- Day 6: run a mixed simulation using your actual assessment rules.
- Day 7: review bad assumptions and arithmetic errors; keep practice light.
Five Rings online assessment FAQ
How long is the Five Rings assessment?
There is no official universal duration published. Candidate reports vary, so rely on the time shown in your invitation.
Are answers exact or estimated?
Prepare for both. Read rounding instructions carefully and avoid spending time on precision the prompt does not require.
What is the best preparation priority?
Practice forming a useful approximation quickly, then add probability, expected value, and clean mental arithmetic.
