HOW TO PREPARE FOR QUANT ONLINE ASSESSMENTS
Quant OAs are short, timed, and unforgiving. This guide covers what they test, how the timing actually works, and a two-week plan to get assessment-ready.

What is a quant online assessment?
A quant online assessment (OA) is a timed screening test that quantitative trading firms, market makers, and hedge funds send to candidates before human interviews. Most quant OAs test mental math speed, number sequences, probability, logic, and pattern recognition — usually with per-question time limits measured in seconds, not minutes.
The OA exists to answer one question cheaply: can this candidate think quickly and accurately under pressure? Firms receive thousands of applications, and the OA is the first filter. Many strong candidates with excellent grades fail it — not because they can't do the math, but because they've never practiced doing it fast.
What do quant OAs test?
Formats vary by firm, but nearly all quant OAs draw from the same five skill areas:

How scoring usually works
Three details about scoring change how you should prepare:
- Wrong answers are often penalized. Many math OAs subtract points for incorrect answers, so guessing blindly is negative expected value. Know your accuracy rate before test day.
- You're scored against other candidates, not against an absolute bar. Median performance won't stand out — you need to be comfortably above the pack on at least speed or accuracy.
- Skipping is usually allowed and often correct. A question that takes you 40 seconds costs you five or six easier questions. Train yourself to bail out fast.
A two-week preparation plan
Two weeks of focused daily practice is enough to move your speed meaningfully if you train the right way. The key is short, timed, daily sessions — speed is a motor skill, and it responds to reps, not cramming.
Days 1–3: Baseline and fundamentals
- Take a timed diagnostic in each category and record your accuracy and average time per question. This is your baseline.

Days 4–9: Volume at the edge of your speed
- Two or three 15-minute timed sessions per day, each session focused on one skill area. Push pace until your accuracy drops to roughly 85–90%, then hold there — that's the edge where speed improves.
- Alternate strong and weak categories. Most candidates over-practice what they're already good at.
- Work through mixed practice questions with worked answers to learn the recurring patterns in sequences and probability.
Days 10–13: Full simulations
- Run full-length timed simulations under real conditions: no pauses, no scratch calculator unless the OA explicitly allows one.
- Practice your skip discipline: set a hard time budget per question and move on when you hit it.
- Review every miss and classify it: knowledge gap, careless slip, or time pressure.
Day 14: Taper
One light session to stay warm. Sleep matters more than one more practice set — reaction time and working memory degrade measurably when you're tired.
Test-day execution
- Warm up first. Do 5–10 minutes of easy arithmetic before opening the OA, the same way you'd warm up before a race.
- Answer the first few questions deliberately. Early questions are usually easier; banking accurate points beats a fast start with two misses.
- Never dwell. If a sequence doesn't reveal its pattern in your time budget, skip. Unanswered beats wrong when penalties apply.
- Use a stable setup: desktop over laptop trackpad, wired internet if possible, phone away, full screen.
The mistakes that cost offers
- Practicing untimed. Untimed practice builds knowledge, not speed. Every practice session should have a clock on it.
- Cramming the night before. Speed is built over days and weeks. A tired brain is a slow brain.
- Ignoring the penalty structure. Guessing on a penalized test is how strong candidates end up with mediocre scores.
- Treating the OA as a formality. At most quant firms, the OA eliminates the majority of the applicant pool. It is the interview.
