HOW HARD IS IT TO BREAK INTO QUANT FINANCE?

It is genuinely competitive, and that is not the same as impossible. Here is what the process actually screens for and which parts of it you can control.

Ask this online and you get either a war story or a shrug. The narrower version is more useful: which stage of the process is actually hard, and which part of it can you do something about?

Yes, it is competitive

The applicant pool is full of people who are good at hard things. That part is real. Firms also move quickly and use online screens because they cannot have a long conversation with everyone who applies.

What the process actually screens

Knowing the shape of the funnel makes it less mysterious. A typical campus process runs something like this:

  1. Application screen. Fast, often keyword-driven. Coursework, projects, and technical experience do the work here.
  2. Online assessment. Timed math, probability, sequences, or coding, depending on the role. This is the stage most candidates underestimate.
  3. Technical interviews. Probability, mental math, market-making questions, or a code review of something you built.
  4. Final rounds. More depth, plus whether people want to work with you and how you handle being wrong.

That is not the same as impossible

The people who get interviews are not all identical academic machines. Firms are looking for evidence that you can think quantitatively, learn quickly, and work with other smart people. A serious class, research project, engineering build, competition, or well-explained personal project can all be useful evidence.

Backgrounds vary more than the forums suggest. Math, physics, computer science, statistics, and engineering all show up regularly. What those paths share is proof that you have done something quantitative and hard, not a specific degree title.

Make the target smaller

Pick a lane and make one thing that proves you care about it. A trading candidate might get genuinely comfortable with probability and market-making. A research candidate might build a clean, reproducible analysis. A developer might make a system project they can explain end to end.

The unglamorous advice

Do not wait until your profile feels finished. Apply, learn how recruiting works, and improve from there. Most people learn more from one real interview cycle than from another month of vague preparation.
